Photographing Trucks For The First Time

I’ve been shooting motorized vehicles for nearly 10 years now but I’ve never had the chance yet to shoot semi-trucks… until now! The project was a complex one with photo and video demands all being squished into one day. As our day began I quickly found out how photogenic these big rigs are, no really, I mean it! The swooping cabs and the huge length of the trucks make for some great leading lines, and in photographic terms, leading lines make for striking images. However, I quickly realized how difficult it is to arrange these truck/trailers. No surprise there. Working with our amazing drivers on the day of the shoot, we managed to maneuver each of the trucks into the positions we need with only minimal communication. Here are the results:

1979 Porsche 935

Over the Winter I had a rare opportunity, the kind that doesn’t come very often. The car is a 1979 Porsche 935 race car, but it was NOT one that was ever sold to or used by a works racing team. In fact, this customer vehicle is one of only 13 that were sold directly from the factory to Porsche VIP customers back in 1979. This particular 935 Porsche belonged to Otis Chandler and was specified in Vintage Racing Blue colors to match his Sunoco liveried 917/30. As a Porsche fan, I basically melted when I got the call to photograph it, but graciously accepted. A few weeks later I flew into the undisclosed location, got to the shop where it was located, walked inside and melted yet again. Car guys all know there are places in this world where all of the amazing cars we see on the internet are ACTUALLY hidden away in real life. Well, this was one of those places. The shop was littered with Porsche race cars ranging from a handful of Carrera 2.7RS’, several Porsche 935 racers, a fully restored Porsche 934.5, and more. As an automotive photographer from Minneapolis, this level of Porsche […]

Rennsport Reunion 6 to Minnesota

This is a story about my travels to Rennsport Reunion Six in Monterey, California and the drive back to Minnesota in my 2007 Porsche Cayman S. On this 3,000 mile journey, I encountered many things, some truly blissful, others agonizing. When you are caught thinking about a long road trip from your cubicle, you think, “wow, I could use one of those right now.” Just you, your Porsche, and the open road. But no cross-country road trip comes without some perils. The trick is, how do you overcome the obstacles and come home safely having chased every adventure to the fullest? This is the story of my trip. Some of you may not know me yet, but my name is Josh Hway. I am a freelance photographer and car-nut. I bought my Porsche from a local gentleman in Eden Prairie with only 35K miles on the clock just three years ago. Since that happy day, I have basically daily-driven the car with the exception of winters, but I have always dreamed of hitting the highway with my little Cayman in search of new roads and grand adventures. Finally, in late 2017 the PCA announced plans for the sixth Rennsport Reunion […]

The Truck of Many Colors

This shoot was done for a new and exciting client, 3M. Our first assignment was to be based in the much warmer climate of Charlotte North Carolina. A nice break from the bitter Minnesota Winter.  The subject of this shoot was under wraps for a long time, so it was amazing to finally see it! The truck, trailer, and it in use was our shoot. Get some pretty hero shots of the vehicle and some interior shots of the trailer in use. The trailer is a mobile training vehicle for 3M vinyl application training. This was the inaugural run. It was an absolute pleasure to work with 3M for the first time on this larger project.

Dodge Viper Factory Delivery

Earlier in the month of April, while at a car show, I was catching up with a good friend/client of mine who has an unrivaled obsession with Dodge Vipers. As we spoke, he reminded me that the day was drawing nearer to his big Viper-day in Detroit. See, I had been hearing snippets from him over the past year that something incredible was in the works for him. He had placed an order on a brand new one of one Dodge Viper ACR Extreme. While there were some difficulties finalizing the paint color for Matt, he finally settled on Stryker Purple. Stryker colors come at a cost over the standard paint colors available to the ACRs, but when you’re buying one of the VERY LAST Vipers to ever be produced, why not go for a rarer color? …Good choice, Matt! So along with Matt, five other local Viper owners had also placed orders for new ACRs as a group. In the last weekend of April, 2017, this whole group of Viper fanatics packed up and headed to Detroit for the big unveil! We arrived at the factory with great excitement and great sadness. Yes, these men and women were all going […]
