Photographing Trucks For The First Time

I’ve been shooting motorized vehicles for nearly 10 years now but I’ve never had the chance yet to shoot semi-trucks… until now! The project was a complex one with photo and video demands all being squished into one day. As our day began I quickly found out how photogenic these big rigs are, no really, I mean it! The swooping cabs and the huge length of the trucks make for some great leading lines, and in photographic terms, leading lines make for striking images. However, I quickly realized how difficult it is to arrange these truck/trailers. No surprise there. Working with our amazing drivers on the day of the shoot, we managed to maneuver each of the trucks into the positions we need with only minimal communication. Here are the results:

Rennsport Reunion 6 to Minnesota

This is a story about my travels to Rennsport Reunion Six in Monterey, California and the drive back to Minnesota in my 2007 Porsche Cayman S. On this 3,000 mile journey, I encountered many things, some truly blissful, others agonizing. When you are caught thinking about a long road trip from your cubicle, you think, “wow, I could use one of those right now.” Just you, your Porsche, and the open road. But no cross-country road trip comes without some perils. The trick is, how do you overcome the obstacles and come home safely having chased every adventure to the fullest? This is the story of my trip. Some of you may not know me yet, but my name is Josh Hway. I am a freelance photographer and car-nut. I bought my Porsche from a local gentleman in Eden Prairie with only 35K miles on the clock just three years ago. Since that happy day, I have basically daily-driven the car with the exception of winters, but I have always dreamed of hitting the highway with my little Cayman in search of new roads and grand adventures. Finally, in late 2017 the PCA announced plans for the sixth Rennsport Reunion […]

HRE Performance Wheels – Porsche 918 Spyder

Over the summer of 2016 I was hired by HRE Wheels to photographer a special car here in Minnesota. The car is a Porsche 918 Spyder. While only 918 were ever made, three of them are here in MN and all owned by a single owner. This particular 918 I have photographed before while in its original blue state. The car has since gained many thousands of miles on the clock, HRE Wheels, and a matte black Martini vinyl wrap.

Aston Martin DB11 – Private Reveal

I was invited to the private, invite only, DB11 sneak peek reveal at a top secret location here in MN today. This new DB11 is one of four making the rounds to different private showings around the world. DB11 production doesn’t start until June. It was a great pleasure to get to see this pre-production model in the metal this far before it goes into production. Shout out to Morries Luxury Auto and Scott for the invite. Thank you!

International Motor Cycle Show 2016

The first few months of each year, while shadowed in the cold-darkness of winter, have one redeeming feature: auto shows. Yes, nothing gets the blood pumping more than looking at the next hot ride for the upcoming summer months. This time it was the IMS (International Motorcycle Show) that got me in out of the cold and into our very own Minneapolis. Thanks to Twisted Throttle, I was able to get in to grab some snaps of the current and next gen motorcycles. I try not to be biased, but I did start with Ducati. 🙂

The ‘Lambo Shot’

My favorite shot this year is one of a Lamborghini Aventador racing into downtown Minneapolis. This shot really just ended up being an experiment, one that allowed me to do a full composite for the very first time. However, I didn’t plan it that way. I first scouted my location weeks in advance plotting a direction, angle, and desired time of day to shoot the photo. Knowing that the location is a major highway, I contacted MN DOT to work out road closure to protect me, my team, and my equipment, but immediately got told to ‘get lost’ by the director of the MN DOT. Crap! My plans are falling apart by this point to try out one of the coolest locations in Minneapolis and its all the DOT’s fault! Plans quickly changed and I decided to make this my first real attempt at composite editing. Just a number of days before shooting the car, I headed out to photograph the location without a Lamborghini anywhere close. I was at the location, I had my camera set up where I wanted, and then I just waited for the right light. Little did I know that I was going to be […]
